What is it? What does it mean?๐๐
I came up with the name Reef Surge years ago, and I’ve wanted to put it to good use ever since. Now’s my chance!
What is Reef Surge?
Scuba diving or kayaking near a vertical reef is a fun way to experience the power of the ocean. If there’s any swell, the surge of the ocean waves push you forward, and then pull you back. Or they lift you up, and then drop you back down. Ebb, and flow…over and over. That’s reef surge.
A fun story:
I remember scuba diving around the “boilers” off the southeast shore of Bermuda. We were diving the wreck of the Pelinaion (pronounced Peh-lay-nee-uhn). And I’m not talking about the ship’s boilers. I’m talking about the cylindrical rock reefs that rise from the sea floor up close to the ocean surface. There was some swell that day, and it was SO MUCH FUN playing in the surge as we circled the boilers. First you’re kicking as hard as you can to stay in one place, and then you torpedo around the curved edge of the giant rock. That’s reef surge.
So what?
Our coral reefs are in danger, but its not too late. Can coral reefs recover? Yup. Can they surge back into vitality after injury? Yup. Can people make it easier for this to happen? We must.
Surge:
/sษrj/ noun: A sudden powerful forward or upward movement, especially by a crowd or by a natural force such as the waves or tide.
Watch this space for a groundswell starting now. That’s Reef Surge.
What is the Reef Surge Blog?
Ocean advocates unite! As David Attenborough said, โwe are within reach of whole new relationship with the ocean. A wiser, more sustainable relationship. The choice lies with us.โ
People can now connect with each other across the globe. Lets get together and make the right choice. That’s what Reef Surge is all about.
Let’s Get Together
We’re more powerful when we’re united. The Reef Surge Blog interviews and profiles ocean conservation leaders and advocates. Our kupuna have paved the way for ocean students to follow in their footsteps. Let’s build each other up, and put aside our rivalries and fears. Celebrate the wonder and magic of the ocean, and show our gratitude for its resilience and beauty.
